I’ve noticed a theme in the collective right now. We are holding on to things that no longer serve us. Holding on to a dead-end job, a broken romantic relationship, unsupportive friends, outdated belief systems, and basically the past. The past is like an anchor holding us back. At this point we’ve outgrown what we’ve been holding on to. These things are no longer beneficial to our wellbeing. We have to let go to make room for the new.
Fall is the perfect season for new beginnings, opportunities, and doors opening. A season of change. The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let the dead things go. Notice how the trees do not cling to their leaves. Fall is about releasing the old to make way for the new.
For the past month I was clinging to something I’ve clearly outgrown. Last week the shit hit the fan and I wondered why it had to happen this way. I realized that if it wasn’t for the big blowout, I would still be holding on to something that wasn’t meant for me. We tend to get stuck in our comfort zones, afraid of change. Deep down somewhere we know what is best for us. We know we deserve better. We deserve to be treated with respect. We deserve to be happy. Yet we hold on avoiding the big blowout because we don’t want to confront it. So, we run, we deny, we resist. We end up running from ourselves and prolonging the inevitable.
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” -Socrates. Change may be uncomfortable for you but it will be worth it. It may get worse before it gets better, and that’s okay too. Think of the caterpillar and its profound transformation into a butterfly. Just when the caterpillar thought it’s life was over, it became a beautiful butterfly. Burn and rebuild like a phoenix! No matter how many times we burn into flames, we will rise from the ashes! Just like a seed, grow from the dirt they left you in. Your pain is not in vain. It will make you stronger. And when you let go that new door that opens will be better than you ever imagined.
